This is a late classical city known for its continuity in development. Upon arrival at the Belize City Cruise Port, you are greeted by our friendly and very experienced guides. The tour then starts off with a brief yet very informative tour of Belize City, the Old Capital of the Country. You’ll learn about its rich culture and history as well as view some of its historical land marks and buildings. You’ll then venture off to the country side which would be approximately a two hours’ drive West of Belize City. It will take you through a number of small communities and you will also be passing the new capital, Belmopan, before arriving to 2 well known towns, San Ignancio and Santa Elena which then leads up to San Jose Soccutz near the Western Boarder which is where Xunantunich is located.
Arriving, you’ll experience a very scenic view of the Mopan River while crossing on the hand cranked ferry. The distance from the ferry is under a mile and suitable for hiking for those in excellent physical condition however the scene is partially wheelchair friendly; the narrow road is well paved but rising and hilly. The center of Xunantunich sits on an artificially levelled limestone ridge that stands almost 183 meters above sea level. From this core area the site radiates outward. The center consists of four major architectural groups including one of the highest manmade structures built in Belize standing a just a little over 40 meters high “El Castillo” preserved by Mother Nature for over 1400 years. Whilst other great cities are beginning to collapse such as Tikal, Caracol, and Naranjo; this city was striving with a vibrant society.
Hike up the mounds, into the walls of these great palaces and temples and learn about the importance of its people, ceremonies, rituals and practices performed to withstand the challenges of the collapse of surrounding cites. Enjoy the view that is not only sacred, panoramic but also a spiritual and divine connection with the Mayas. Come venture into this beautiful city with us.
